What is a Welcome to Country?
A Welcome to Country is a formal cultural protocol delivered by a Traditional Custodian of the land where the event takes place. It respectfully opens an event and acknowledges Country and Elders past and present.
Who can perform a Welcome to Country?
A Welcome to Country is given by a Traditional Custodian of the local Country. If a Traditional Custodian is not available, an Acknowledgement of Country may be given by the event organiser instead.
What is a Smoking Ceremony?
A Smoking Ceremony is a traditional cleansing ritual using native plants and smoke to acknowledge Country, mark significant occasions and bring people together with positive intention.
Are Smoking Ceremonies safe for public events?
Yes. Ceremonies are conducted safely and respectfully, following local regulations and venue requirements. We can advise on suitable outdoor locations and planning.
What is Cultural Education?
Cultural education sessions share Wanaruah history, culture and protocol in an engaging way. Programs can be tailored for schools, workplaces, councils and community groups.
How far in advance should we book?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for school graduations, conferences and council events. However, we will always try to assist with short-notice enquiries.
Where do you provide services?
Wanaruah Cultural Services is based in the Hunter Valley and travels across New South Wales.
How long do ceremonies take?
Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies usually take between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on the event. Cultural education sessions can range from short talks to half-day workshops.
How much do services cost?
Fees vary depending on location, timing and type of ceremony. Please contact us with your event details for a clear quote.
